American Film Ratings
The american film ratings are: G, PG, PG-13, RESTRICTED(R) AND NC-17.
G- this is what we in the UK would label as a U Rating. An example of this is the film Toy Story 3. This film was rate G by the MPAA because it contained nothing in the view of the rating board which would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture. I think that although the film features side jokes and comments of an older nature it is not inappropriate therefore all of the family can enjoy it.
PG- this is the rating which is the same in the UK meaning parental guidance is advised for younger children watching this film. An example of this rating is the film Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief. The film was rated PG by the MPAA because it contains action violence, some scary images, suggestive material and mild language.
PG-13- this is the American equivalent of the rating 12. This means that some material could be classed as inappropriate to children under 13. An example of this rating is the film Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1. The film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA because of intense action violence, frightening images and brief sensuality.
R- this is the american equivalent of the rating 15. This means that some material could be classed as inappropriate for people under the age of 17. An example of this rating is the film Gladiator. The film was rated R by the MPAA because of violence, language and intense, graphic combat.
NC-17- this is the American equivalent of the rating 18. This means that material could be classed as inappropriate for people aged 17 and under. An example of this rating is the film The Night Buffalo. The film was rated NC-17 by the MPAA because of some graphic sexuality.
PG-13- this is the American equivalent of the rating 12. This means that some material could be classed as inappropriate to children under 13.
