RESEARCH DIARY- Secondary Qualitative Data
On your topic, target audience (helps prove who your audience is), how to make a documentary look at:
- 2 books
- 2 websites
- 2 magazines/newspapers or journals
How To Set Out Your Diary:
- BOOKS- get a "quote" from a book (write the page number and author name underneath it)
- Summarise what the quote says/means in your own words
- How useful was this research? what did it tell you about? Was it relevant? Was it biased? Was it easy to understand? Will it help inform your documentary?
- Find a section from a book that is useful to you and summarise it into a minimum of 3 or 4 bullet points.
- How useful was the summary? Was it relevant? Was it biased? Easy to understand? Will it help inform your documentary?
- WEBSITES- Academic or Relevant. NO WIKIPEDIA -it can be useful for a basis, scroll down to the bottom where there are references for REAL research
- Find a section of a website that is useful to you- summarise it into 3 or 4 bullet points.

- MAGAZINES/NEWSPAPERS/ JOURNALS- find a "quote" (link to the name of the author, title of magazine/paper/journal and the date it was published)

- Research a section of the article and summarise it into 3/4 bullet points

ANALYSE OTHER DOCUMENTARIES FOR THE THINGS THEY USE TO HOOK THEIR AUDIENCE.
DO SOME PRIMARY RESEARCH: INTERVIEWS OR QUESTIONNAIRES.
Possible Interview/Questionnaire Questions:
- If they watch Documentaries
- NO: Why don't they watch them
- YES: What they watch
- What are they interested in
- Ask about my topic- what do they know about? What is their opinion on that?
TREATMENT
What is in it and how to set it out:
- Who the Target Audience is (be specific, age, gender, interests, psychographics -MUSIC, ARTWORK, INTERVIEWING LOTS OF PEOPLE, LANGUAGE, STYLE AND GRAPHICS.)
- How you are going to target your audience. -teenagers,
- How will your documentary be better than other documentaries for young people. -ideas, jazzy, different, styling.
- Plot/Outline- explain the layout and format of your documentary (Participatory/Observational)
- What will your audience learn? -explain some facts and research from my topic (refer back to your Research Diary)
