Sound Unit 38 Lesson part 1

In today's lesson the class was taught by Dan who kick-started our first official unit by teaching us about sound technology, giving us lots of new terminology and different areas to explore. We learnt some key words and what goes in to the sound aspect of filming and recording. I enjoyed learning about the different stages of sound production as it was interesting to find out how it works and so I can become more creative with my filming and any pre-production tasks I may cover.

There are five job descriptions which we were taught within the lesson they are listed below with a definition:

  • Sound Designer- this is the most important job within sound production, it is their job to come up with all of the sound needed for a production before any recording is started. It is their job to oversee the work of the other members in the sound production team.
  • Composer/Score Writer-  this is a person who composes music, writes a score created from scratch to fit with a piece of moving image. A SOUNDTRACK IS DIFFERENT TO A SCORE.
  • Foley Artist- a Foley artist is a person who creates/mimics sounds for everything that moves on screen e.g. footsteps.
  • Sound Mixer- their job is to mix/balance sound during post-production.
  • Sound Recordist- this person is on location (away from the studio) carrying a boom pole, it is their job to record sound during production.
There are two different types of microphones used when recording sound; the Lavier/lapel mic and the shotgun mic.
