Sound notes and task

Genre means task, the genre can be proven  by looking at examples from the micro elements. Films can be more than one genre so they can be a hybrid. Generic conventions are the things you expect to see, e.g. blood- generic convention of a horror. Narrative deals with structure, linear/non-linear, multistrands. Narrative also includes character type such as heroes, villains and/or victims. Narrative can also discuss enigma codes. Enigmas are puzzles, something that has to be solved they make the narrative more interesting.

Diagetic and Non-diagetic are two terms used to describe sound. Diagetic sound is sound which is part of the film world these are things such as dialogue. If it's set in an office phones ringing, keys clicking all of the ambient/background sounds.
Non-diagetic sound is sound which is not recognised as part of the film world such things as voice-over or background music. Anything that is added onto the video afterwards. Soundtracks and voice-overs are the ones most commonly used.
Contrapuntal sound is sound which does not fit with the image. An example a person opening their mouth to scream and a klaxon comes out.
Sound Bridges help sound lead on from one sequence to the next.
Sounds can be in high/low pitch, fast/slow pace.

TASK:

Research films that have won awards for Sound then watch clips from them, what are you feeling when you watch them? Do you think the sound reflects the genre?

List of films:
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Chicago
  • Gladiator
  • E.T.
  • Jaws
  • Jurassic Park
  • The Matrix
  • Speed
  • King Kong
  • Inception
  • Les Miserables (2012 film)
  • West Side Story

I feel sad when I watch this clip from Gladiator as the song is a slow pace, the lyrics sound sad and it is in quite a low pitch which makes the song sound deep and meaningful it makes me think about deeper things making me emotional. The song tells of an ending making me feel sad about the death of Maximus. I don't think the song reflects the genre because it is an Action film so you would probably expect a faster more edgy sound to be played.

When I watch this clip from West Side Story I feel excited as the music is very upbeat and is in relatively high pitch. The song builds creating more excitement as you want to find out what will happen after the song what that "something is" the music reflects the character's feelings of happiness and excitement creating the same feelings within the viewing audience. It sounds happy and fun which is typical of the Musical genre. Making me want to sing along.
